Malawi Education Link's teams have now helped build, develop or refurbish 39 schools, almost all of them within 20 kilometres of Ngala. As what we do becomes more widely known, villages in even more remote areas send delegations to ask for help. Often, these villages (Chivumu, Kazomba are two examples) have no road access for part of the year. Villagers have had to carry the 50kg bags of cement we provided, up into the hills on their heads or on the backs of bicycles.
Villages have to provide accommodation for teachers, preferably with tin roofs: the better the housing, the more chance a village stands of recruiting good teachers for their children! In return, the government pledges to pay the wages of those teachers.
